TFF 2011 kicked off with an unforgettable night of free cinema and music: the premiere of "The Union", Cameron Crowe's music doc about Elton John and Leon Russell, followed by a 30-minute live outdoor concert by Sir Elton John himself.

Red carpet arrivals and pre-show included Martin Scorsese, Bernie Taupin, T-Bone Burnett, Dennis Leary, ?uestlove, Jane Rosenthal and the PS22 Choir featuring the Bangles. Close to 6000 fans filled the plaza behind the World Financial Center, overlooking the Hudson River, to enjoy the outdoor screening and performances.
